LESSON 1.3
Put “A” Ideas in Order

Grades 1-6

Only one idea can be best. How do you choose? Imagine you have a whole box of colorful crayons, but you can only use one to draw a picture of your favorite animal. So many fun colors to pick from.

How do you decide? Use a Decision Table.

A decision chart helps you  pick the best idea.

Task 1.3.1 – Small Group

You are the coach of five cheerleaders: Abbie, Betty, Carla, Darla, and Emy. The season just ended. Who wins the Best Cheerleader Award?

st words: To make st words , you add est or st. For example, happy becomes happiest, tall becomes tallest, funny becomes funniest. And sometimes you will use most.

You choose evaluation questions, such as:

  • Who is the peppiest?
  • Who is the best dancer?
  • Who has the best smile?
  • Who is the best tumbler?
  • Who has the best grades?

Next, we make a table. Each cheerleader gets a row, and each question gets a column.

Use numbers to rate each cheerleader from 1 to 5, with 5 being the best and 1 being worst.

Decide on the best in the first column you will grade.  Give it a 5, since there are five cheerleaders.

Then decide on the worst in that column.  Grade it a 1.

Next, decide on the next best in that column.  Give it a 4

Decide on the second worst in that column.   Give it a 2

You will have one empty box remaining.  It will be a 3.

Task 1.3.2 Create a Decision Table

Your class will send ONE gift to a poor child in the African country of Malawi.  Your teacher will teach you about the country.

  1. In small groups, brainstorm at least 15 ideas. Anything goes. You will have three minutes.
  2. There will be a prize for the group with the most ideas.  Each person must give at least three ideas.
  3. As a class, eliminate all duplicate ideas.  (Your teacher can do this.)
  4. As a class, grade the ideas:
      • Woohoo!  Adult readers will likely not have thought of this and will say “Wow!”
      • Better.      Adult readers will likely not have thought of this.
      • Yawn,      Adult readers will like have thought of this.
  5. Make and use a Decision Table for the A ideas.
  6. In case of a tie, flip a coin.

To Make a Decision  , follow these three easy steps as shown in the screenshots:

1- Open Microsoft Word and click on the INSERT button.

2- Go down where it says INSERT TABLE. Click on it.

2- Here you choose your options for columns and rows.
