LESSON 5.21
Write Why Section

The What Section consists of Variable 1 and 2. There are never more than two variables.

The Why Section tells why the What Section is true or important. True is far less common than important.

The Number of Ys

Hypothetically, you could have any number of Ys, but 2-3 is best.

  • One Y: this does happen, especially in very short papers. But usually, having only one Y indicates that you did not research the subject enough.

  • Two-Three Ys: Have 2-3 Ys shows that your thinking is mature enough to look fairly deeply into the subject.

  • Four Ys: You are looking deeply into the subject and are still in control of your writing. However, it is best to identify four Ys but not to write them all unless your paper is not long enough to meet assignment requirements.

  • Five+ Ys: You must research, organize, and write each Y. The more Ys you have, the more work you can expect.

The I of IDP for the Why Section

Organize with IDP for each Y.  For part I of IDP, modify the What/Why Statement.

Y1: One reason Mills’ win is especially important is because he has been able to help underprivileged Native American communities.

Y2: A second reason Mills’ win is especially important is because he has inspired Native American youth.

I (Introduction) of IDP in the Why Section

  • Shorten the What Statement if you can.

  • Sometimes you will include the entire What Statement. We will examine that in Chapter Six.

  • In Y2 you should say “A second reason,” not “Another” That way, you can have a Y3 or Y4 if you later decide to include them.

  • You add an is before because.

Task 5.21.1 – Tandem or Small Group

  1. Start a file that says Y1: Mills + Native American Communities. On a separate page, start a file that says Y2: Mills and Native American Youth.

  2. Use the following articles, found in the Unit II materials folder, to research Y1 and Y2. Use the cut and paste method.

  3. Use the articles to locate other materials that you can research. Then copy and paste. Make sure you assign a letter to each article. Type the letter below everything you paste into your Y1 and Y2 files.

  4. Organize the material in Y1 into—

D:    Define, describe, and/or discuss

Use numbers to organize Part D chronologically or from most important to least important.

P:     Provide evidence

Use numbers to organize Part P chronologically or from most important to least important.

Task 5.21.2 – Tandem or Small Group

Task 5.21.3 – Tandem or Small Group

Return to Lesson 5.20. Following its instructions, write, check wordiness, and rewrite Y2. Then check the grammar and spelling.
