LESSON 5.11
Prioritize Why Ideas
The Why section tells readers why the What Statement is true or important. In this essay, we are telling why it is important.
You now have at least five “A” why ideas. If you do not have that many, then return to Lesson 5.10 and research reasons why the What Statement is important..
Let’s say that you have the following why ideas.
Possible Idea | Name | Why Important | Why’s | Why Old? |
White slavery | Florence Baker | Her story makes us want to examine modern-day slavery | New |
|
The Old West in 1820 | Jim Bridger | Opened up the West for migration and settlement | New |
|
Newly discovered ancient cities in the Amazon | Percy Fawcett | Shows that several millions from South Amer. civilizations probably died from smallpox and other European diseases | New |
|
Polio | Wilma Rudolph | Revolutionized sprinting for female Americans | Gen | Y is too general |
Racism against Native American runners | Billy Mills | Helped raise awareness and funds in Native American communities | New |
|
The creation of Nike shoes | Steve Prefontaine | Inspired a generation of American runners | Gen | Y is too general |
The history of the marathon | Eliud Kipchoge | Made researchers ask why so many great runners come from one valley in Kenya | New |
|
We will keep only the why ideas that are New

Prioritizing
Obviously, we aren’t going write about all the Why ideas. So let’s put them in order of preference.
- Which Y interests me the most?
- Which Y likely interests educated adults the most?
- Which Y is the easiest to research?
Let a Decision Chart Decide for You
There are five ideas, so we will need six rows
There are three criteria to evaluate them, so we will need five columns
There are five ideas, so the top score will be 5.
Y ideas | Most interests me | Most interests adults | Easiest to research | Total |
Modern slavery | 3 | 3 | 4 | 10 |
Western migration | 2 | 1 | 2 | 5 |
Loss of South American civilizations | 4 | 5 | 3 | 12 |
Awareness/funds in Native American communities | 1 | 2 | 1 | 4 |
Great runners from one valley in Kenya | 5 | 4 | 5 | 14 |
In case of a tie, flip a coin.
Task 5.11.1 – Tandem, Small Group, or Class
Prioritize the Why ideas you have from Lesson 5.10. You can use the same criteria as are here.
